The Gospel of John Lesson 14
Chapter 13. Feet Washing
1. Jesus washed the Disciples' feet. v. 1-17.
In the beginning man desired to become as God, an exalted
being.(Gen. 3) Here God became a man, a servant,
The hour of departure to the Father was at hand.
Christ's love endured. Love is the true basis of services
(In Gen. 18 the Three Angels (including the Lord) came to
Abraham who entertained them and washed their feet. Two
thousand years later one of the Angels, even the Lord
Jesus knelt before humble believers and washed their feet.)
Note also 1 Tim. 5:10.
The Type The Fulfillment
Jesus became a servant------- ) "Took upon Him the form of a servant.."
) Philippians 2:7
Laid aside His garments ---- ) "Emptied Himself" . (Literal translation)
Prepared for service ------- ) The prepared Body. Heb. 10:5, Mk. 10:45.
Washed the disciples' feet -- ) Cleanses our hearts and walk by His death
in humility. ) on the Cross.
After washing He took ------ ) After the Cross He arose from the dead
His garments. ) and took again His glory.
He sat down --------------- ) He sat down at the right hand of the
) Majesty on high. Heb. 1:3, Eph. 1:20.
Declared Himself Lord-------- ) Declared to be the Lord and Christ
and Master. ) Acts 2:36.
As a servant He commissioned ) As the Servant He commissioned His
them to be servants. ) disciples to serve. Matt.28:18-20, Mk.16
) 15-20. "The Lord working with them"--
) He still serves.
Happy in so doing - --------- ) Happy in so doing.
Christ taught by example and by precept to serve in humility
and love To truly serve we must love and be humble. (Note
Luke 22:24-27--the strife in the shadow of the Cross. "Who
is the greatest?" The same today. Cf. 3 John 9.)
2. Jesus showed who would betray Him. v. 18-30.
As He conversed with His disciples He announced that one of
them would betray Him. v.18-21. Cf. John 6:70-71.
Jesus then showed that it was Judas by giving him the
sop. v.22-26. Satan entered in Judas. He went out
immediately."And it was night"--naturally and spiritually.
He had treacherously deserted the Light of the World.
The disciples did not know why Judas went out. Jesus kept it
secret. v. 28-30,
Christ's death was not an accident, but He knew full well that
it was coming and voluntarily went to the Cross, He had said,
"I have power to lay down my life and to take it again." John
10:18.
He did not die as a martyr for a righteous cause but as a
vicarious substitutionary offering for the sins of the world.
John 1:29.
3. Jesus began to tell of His departure. v. 31:38.
Now the time had come. Judas had gone, death was fast
approaching. Christ saw the glory in and through the Cross.
Five times He used the word "Glory". Cf.Heb.12:2,
Philippians 2:5-11.
He told them that in a little while He must go.
Love is the bond that must keep the disciples. v. 34.
love is evidence that we are Christ's. v. 35.
Jesus foretold Peter's fall. Peter thought his love was strong
but it was weak. v. 36-38.
